I remember the day vividly
It was a vacation monday
Swaying in excitement
I went to the bank hurriedly
To the surprise of the cashiers
A lady officer enquired
After glancing on my application
In broken Bengali
What does a 13 year old boy
Need at the bank so urgently!
A week ago, I had seen
An advertisement that said
"Bank acounts could now be opened by a teen"
Also a weekly journal had columns that
Put ideas of financial awareness in my brain
Filled the forms
Helped by father who was keen
And pinned the documents
That school Identity card
My only proof it had been.
The officer who opened my account
Gave me a special gift
A chocolate and a pen
Gift wrapped with a message
I waltzed in joy
Ran to home
With a passbook
My name it bourne
Later one day
A scholarship from the board
The account untouched
For it has
My first memory
Of my curiousity
Of the bank lady's kindness
Of the officer's generosity
Of the surprise
And of the first prize!
