Just like any man in our society
To show less emotions my baba was taught,
Lest he may be thought emasculate,
If expressing his love he was caught.
His love is not in the sudden bear hugs
Or the common words of love we utter,
But in the loudest clap in the hall,
Even when at a debate I may stutter.
His love is not in the prettiest dress he bought
Or in the costliest shoe on the shelf,
But the long hours he sat beside me solving equations, imparting the knowledge making me my best self.
The extra hours of work he put in
Even when his shift was only till five,
Have taught me that it is for loved ones that we live
And for them it is that we strive.
Life had it's twists for him when one by one
It took away his father and his mate,
But he was not the one to bow down and crumble
He stood up strong and never cursed his fate.
Don't be fooled by his short height or frailed figure
Or even that honest innocent face,
If he makes a decision and sets his heart on it,
He will see the end of it like the horse of a long race.
With an ailment to the lovely heart,
Attached to tubes he lay in hospital bed,
But when he heard I was down with chicken pox,
It was only for me that he prayed.
When a girl gets married one day
To start a journey of her own,
The ritual of rice throwing is prevelant,
To lessen her debts with parents she has grown.
I refused to do this ritual
And throw away any rice,
For is his love a debt to me,
Can it be ever valued with a price?
